The lemon peel stitch is perfect for any crochet project that needs a fairly resistant fabric with an exquisite texture . You can use it on hats, headbands, bags and many other projects you have in mind.

Materials

How to knit a lemon peel stitch?

Start your piece by making a chain of the length you want. For this sample, the initial chain is 25 chains. (You could also start with a single crochet row if you prefer.)

Now we are going to knit the first row. Start by working a single crochet in the second chain from the hook.

Next, work a double crochet into the next chain.

Continue this pattern alternating single crochets and double crochets until you reach the end of the row.

We will follow the same pattern on the next row, making sure to always work a single crochet into a double crochet and vice versa.

Since the first stitch I’m working on is a double crochet, I’ll work a single crochet first. I start by making a chain and then I make a single crochet in the first stitch.

Since my sample has an even number of stitches, each row starts with a single crochet. If I had an odd number of stitches in my rows, then the rows would start alternately with single crochets and double crochets.

Next, I will work a double crochet into the next stitch (which is a single crochet).

And this is the main reason I love this stitch (besides the delicious texture): you never have to refer to a chart or pattern. All you have to do is look at the stitch you’re working on: a single crochet becomes a double crochet and vice versa. Very easy.

Follow this pattern until the piece is the size you want.
