The basket is worked in rows from bottom to top.

The bottom of the solid color A basket is worked in continuous rounds (spiral). Do not join the last stitch of the round with the first stitch of the round unless otherwise indicated and do not turn at the beginning of the rounds.

The color of the thread is changed to form a checkerboard pattern on the top of the basket. The last stitch of the last round of solid color A and all subsequent rounds are joined to the first stitch of the round to achieve a smooth color transition. When changing thread color, do not fasten the previous color until instructed, carry the previous color along the inside of the basket.

For this project it is not essential that the gauge be exact. Work firmly for a sturdy basket.

The road

Wrap A around your index finger. Insert the hook into the finger ring, yarn over and make a loop. Carefully slide the ring off the finger and work the stitches from round 1 on the ring.

Row 1 (right side): Pc 1, work 6 sc in the ring, do not join, work in continuous rows (spiral). Place the marker on the last sc made to indicate the end of the round. Move the marker up as each lap is completed. Gently but firmly pull the tail to tighten the center of the ring.

Round 2: Work 2 sc in each stitch around – you will have 12 sc.

Round 3: *Sc in next stitch, 2 sc in next stitch; repeat from * around – 18 sc.

Round 4: * sc in the next 2 stitches, 2 sc in the next stitch; repeat from * around – 24 sc.

Round 5: * sc in the next 3 stitches, 2 sc in the next stitch; repeat from * around – 30 sc.

Round 6: * sc in the next 4 stitches, 2 sc in the next stitch; repeat from * around – 36 sc.

Round 7: * sc in the next 5 stitches, 2 sc in the next stitch; repeat from * around – 42 sc.

Round 8: * sc in the next 6 stitches, 2 sc in the next stitch; repeat from * around – 48 sc.

Round 9: Pb-blo in each stitch around.

Rounds 10-12: SC in each stitch around.

Round 13: SC in each stitch around; join with a sl st in the first sc of this row. Don’t cut A.

Chess board pattern

Round 14: From the right side, trace a loop of B at the same point as the join of pr; with B, sc 1, sc-blo in the same point, sc-blo in the next point; with A, sc-blo in the next 2 points, * with B, sc-blo in the next 2 points; with A, pb-blo in the next 2 points; repeat from * around; join with a pr in the first point.

Round 15: With A, sc 1, sc-blo in the same point of the union of pr, sc-blo in the next stitch; with B, sc-blo in the next 2 points, * with A, sc-blo in the next 2 points; with B, pb-blo in the next 2 points; repeat from * around; join with a pr in the first point.

Round 16: With B, sc 1, sc-blo in the same stitch as the sl union, sc-blo in the next stitch; with A, sc-blo in the next 2 points, * with B, sc-blo in the next 2 points; with A, pb-blo in the next 2 points; repeat from * around; join with a pr in the first point. Fasten A.

Round 17: With B, sc 1, sc-blo in the same point as the sl union, sc-blo in each stitch around; Join with a sl st in the first sc.

Round 18: With B, sc 1, sc in each stitch around; Join with a sl st in the first sc.
