Row 1 (right side): tr in 3rd tr from hook (skipped leading tr doesn’t count as a stitch here and throughout) and in every tr across, turn – 52 (58) tr.

Row 2: ch 2 (does not count as a stitch), dc in the first 33 (39) stitches, leave the remaining stitches unworked, turn – 33 (39) dc.

Row 3: 21st ch, tr in 3rd tr from hook and in each remaining tr (tassel made), tr in the next 33 (39) stitches, turn – 33 (39) tr and 1 tassel.

Repeat rows 2 and 3 until piece measures 18 (20)” [45.5 (51) cm], ending with row 2. Fasten, leaving a 30″ (76 cm) tail to sew.

Finish

With the final tail, sew the first and last rows together through the first 33 (39) stitches; don’t sew the tassel. To close the top of the hat, she cuts a long tail, with the yarn needle, weaves around the base of the fringe, pulls tight to close and secure.
