Measures

✅ The ruana measures approximately 36” wide x 60” long [91.5 x 152.5 cm].

Caliber

✅ 8 points = 4” [10 cm]; 7 1⁄2 rows = 4” [10 cm] in (sc, sc 1) pattern worked with A. 5 stitches = 4” [10 cm]; 2 rows = 4” [10 cm] in dc worked with B.

Instructions

The ruana is made with two identical rectangles and a collar.

The rectangles are sewn together for the back seam. The collar is made separately and sewn to the edge of the collar.

The rectangles stretch when wearing the ruana.

Rectangle (beam 2)

With A, pc 122.

Row 1: Sc in 2nd sc from hook, sc in next sc, *sc 1, skip next sc, sc in next sc; repeat from * to last sc, sc in last sc – 62 sc and 59 sc 1 spaces.

Row 2: Sc 1, turn, sc in first sc, *sc 1, skip next sc, sc in next sc space 1; repeat from * to last 2 sc, sc 1, skip next sc, sc in last sc – 61 sc and 60 sc 1 spaces.

Row 3: Sc 1, turn, sc in first sc, sc in next sc 1 space, *sc 1, skip next sc, sc in next sc 1 space; repeat from * to last sc, sc in last sc – 62 sc and 59 sc 1 spaces.

Rows 4-33: Repeat rows 2 and 3 fifteen times.

Row 34: Repeat row 2.

Button up.

Neck

With B, pc 4.

Row 1: Work 2 dc in the 4th dc from the hook (3 skipped dc counts as first dc) – 3 dc.

Row 2: Dc 3 (counts as dc and throughout), turn, dc in first 2 dc, 2 dc on top of initial dc – 5 dc.

Rows 3-12: Dc 3, turn, dc in next 3 dc, dc in top of initial dc.

Row 13: Dc 3, turn, dc2tog over the next 2 dc, dc2tog over the next dc and on top of the initial dc – 3 dc.

Row 14: Dc 3, turn, dc2tog over next dc and top of initial dc – 2 dc.

Button up.

Finish

Place both rectangles side by side on a flat surface with the long edges together in the center.

Starting at one short end of the rectangles, sew the rectangles together about half the length of the back seam.

Fold the neck in half to find the center point. Sew the center point of one long edge of the collar to the seam between the two rectangles. Sew the rest of the same long collar edge to the edges of the rectangles (collar edge).

Weave the ends.
